About

Hi! I’m Laura! I love designing new items! In those rare moments the kids are playing nicely, and the house is cleanish, I enjoy crocheting and writing up patterns.

I love my family with all my heart. I am the proud mom to three brilliant and completely different children. They keep life interesting and keep me youthful with all the laughing and fun they bring to my life.

My 4 year old daughter spent the first 13 months of her life hospitalized in critical care. Initially she was given a 0% chance of survival. She not only survived and made medical history by doing so, she is thriving. Nearly everyday she does something we never expected, but always hoped and strived towards. It’s truly incredible. She inspires me to remain strong and hold on to hope, no matter the odds.

I am hoping this venture helps create a better life for all of my kids. If nothing else, it’s a creative outlet, which is therapy for the soul!

over the head threads

I started Over the Head Threads purely as a retail store, selling hats and scarves. Hence the name, over the head threads! I really enjoyed creating original pieces of fiber art for family, friends, and eventually customers that didn’t already know me! I always kept a notebook handy to write down my crochet pattern- the “recipe” of sorts- so I could recreate it in the future.

These notebooks quickly began to fill up- not just with items I had made- but with items I dreamed of making. I would see it in my head, or think of something, then quickly jot down for later. I had so many notebooks and scraps of paper covered with ideas. I knew I had to do something about it! So I started typing them up. I quite enjoyed doing so, and continued for my own personal reference.

When my youngest daughter was born five years ago, I was already on bed rest for 4 months, and struggling to complete orders on Etsy. It was a bit of a nightmare, especially when my daughter was born one month early and whisked away to the NICU for the next 13 months. Orders were cancelled, and I closed down my shop. I had no idea if I would ever be able to run a retail shop again. My main focus- okay, ALL of my focus- was elsewhere at the time, but I still missed running my shop.

Then something wonderful happened- I shared some of my crochet patterns with the world. I was nervous at first, and a bit unsure if I wanted to really put myself out there like that. After a bit of internal debate, I published a few crochet patterns to Ravelry and Etsy, which were received well. That gave me the confidence to continue to publish more patterns. Soon I was able to grow my business from a physical items shop into a digital downloads shop. Now I could give my all to my kids, while still running a shop. I was still doing what I loved!

Being able to design and publish patterns is like a dream come true for me. It really checks off all the boxes for me. I have always wanted to be a teacher- and my tutorials and patterns allow for that. I have always wanted to be artistic- well, yarn made me realize that I WAS artistic. I also really wanted to be a boss bitch an entrepreneur- check that off the list, too!

I really love what I do, and I really want my customers to enjoy the patterns I create, too. I strive to ensure my patterns are accurate, original, and easy to understand. I love to create patterns that newbies can follow, but veteran hookers also will find engaging. It brings me so much joy to run Over the Head Threads, I can’t wait to see where it takes me next! Thank you for being part of this journey, now let’s get hookin’!
